What makes the C5 program special? Why should I support C5 instead of another youth development program? There are two things that set us apart from most youth development agencies. The first is the long-term commitment we make to the youth who participate in our five year program and the second is the intentional nature of the program. We work with our youth from the summer after they complete 7th grade until they graduate from high school, providing support and stability during those critical years as a young person moves through adolescence. And everything we do is designed to help our youth achieve the outcomes we’ve outlined for them. While there are a lot of youth development programs that do good work, there are few fully integrated models – and none that can be taken to scale – supporting youth with comprehensive developmental opportunities from middle school through high school.
How many teens do you reach? Each year 72 rising 8th graders are brought into C5 Los Angeles, so when the program is mature there will be between 300 and 350 teens.
How much does it cost to provide the C5 program? It costs approximately $950,000 a year to make C5 available in a community. By the time a C5 teens graduates from high school, we will have invested approximately $15,000 in his or her development. This significant investment allows us to have a dramatic impact in the life of a promising teen growing up in a risk-filled environment.
Why does each program only include 72 teens each year? One of the things we know is that youth need strong positive relationships with other teens and supportive adults. Those relationships can be facilitated best in a small group setting and so we limit each incoming class to 72 teens. This allows us to change the odds for a small, but realistic, number of youth. Through the success of our youth and the ripple effect they cause, our communities win.
